90-FOOT NATURAL GRASS BASEBALL DIAMONDS IN BROOKLYN

The sport of baseball has always been properly played grass baseball fields with infield areas that have dirt basepaths, home plate area and pitchers mound. For older players in the Brooklyn B-Leagues, these fields all have a 90-foot distance between each of the bases on the diamond, a diagonal distance from first base to third base or home plate to seecond base of 127 1/4 feet, and a 60-foot 6-inch distance between home plate and the pitcher's rubber on the mound. Dimensions and foul lines are all carefully maintained but there is real difficulty maintaining the infield and outfield grass. The cost of maintianing grass has led the BNYC Dept of Parks and Recreation to replace natural grass baseball field with "low-maintenance" artifical turf fields.
