In 1861 Charles Brown bought land in the City of Brooklyn, that now, with an adjacent area, Ocean Hill, is Brooklyn Community District #16, Brownsville. The Palmer Raids in 1920, Murder Inc. in 1939, and school strikes in 1968 all made the national news. But the 100-year-old Brownsville War Memorial at Pitkin and East New York Avenues is more lasting. Honoring Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish soldiers of World War I, its Winged Victory Figure recalls Brownsville as it was known in the early 1900s - the Jerusalem of Brooklyn. |
